June shop price inflation

Shop price inflation held at 1.2% YoY in June, unchanged on May but above the three-month average of 1.1%. The stability masks a rotation beneath.

Food eased to 2.4% from 2.7%, driven by fresh at 2.8% vs 3.4% last month as bumper crops and competition held down strawberries and ice cream. Ambient food went the other way, up to 1.9% from 1.6%, while non-food returned to 0.6% from 0.5%, well ahead of its 0.3% three-month average.

Retailers discounted clothing, footwear and household textiles into the hot weather, and NIQ notes food inflation is being held down by price cuts and elevated promotional activity.
